The process of tsunami formation begins with a sudden change beneath the sea surface. Earthquakes, which occur frequently on the Pacific Ring of Fire, are the main cause. For example, an earthquake in Japan in 2011 generated a tsunami that devastated the eastern part of the country. Likewise, volcanic eruptions such as those that occurred in Krakatoa in 1883 can also trigger large tsunamis. Tsunamis have several phases. After a triggering event, the first wave may not always be the strongest. The second and third waves, which follow, are often the most dangerous. Therefore, affected communities must remain vigilant after the first wave. And when a tsunami occurs, a sound like an airplane is often heard, signaling that a giant wave is approaching. Tsunami measurements and warnings are essential to minimize loss of life and property. Tsunami Early Warning Systems have been implemented in many countries, with sensors in the middle of the sea that detect changes in pressure due to tsunami waves. After detecting a tsunami, warnings can be sent to threatened coastal areas. However, timeliness in receiving this information is crucial, because a tsunami can reach the coast in just a few minutes. The most vulnerable areas are those along tectonic plates. Returning again to Japan, the 2011 tragedy is a clear example of how the system is not always ready to handle these devastating events. In Indonesia, tsunamis are part of history, such as the 2004 Aceh Tsunami which killed hundreds of thousands of people. Education and evacuation drills are very important for coastal communities. During the simulation, residents are taught to identify higher and safer places to take shelter. This awareness can help save lives. In addition, strong infrastructure and good spatial planning policies are needed to reduce the impact of tsunamis. Being a person who is prepared for disasters is a must. By understanding the causes and impacts of tsunamis, we can improve mitigation measures and improve emergency responses.
